Traditionally, renunciation meant relinquishing all material comforts, desires, and relationships in the interest of spiritual enlightenment. And, while we don’t need to go to those extremes, I’ve found it incredibly helpful on my own path to occasionally ask, “what can I give up in support of my practice?”

This question was first posed to me by my meditation teacher, Susan Piver, and I thought about it for days… Was it supposed to be something concrete like giving up gluten or TV or wine? Was it supposed to be more ethereal like letting go of judgment, expectations, self-doubt…?

In the end, where I landed was that there is no “supposed to be” here. There is no right answer. There is only YOUR answer. What can you give up in support of your practice?

In our quest to Awaken this month, we started our practice last week with the reminder to keep it simple. To allow ourselves to gently focus on our efforts without adding too much to it.

This week, we continue to encourage our eyes to open with Discipline. I know, I know… it sounds a little harsh. BUT, in many traditional teachings what we find is that discipline is synonymous with JOY. Yes, joy. How could this be so? I believe it is because within structure we find freedom. Within stability, creativity thrives.

Awakening Part 1 of 3

This month we are focusing on AWAKENING at Sacred Chill {West} and in our meditations. This first installment of my April series is focused on the simplicity of awakening. The gentleness of waking up to appreciation for this one and only moment of our human life.

The reminder to keep it simple is a helpful one for staying consistent in our meditation practice. Don’t let anyone sell you on the difficulty of meditation. You don’t have to have the THINGS. You don’t have to have the perfect space or the perfect training. You just have to apply the technique on a consistent basis, that’s it. Everything else is coming….

Thinking vs. Feeling

That moment when your meditation teacher says, “pay attention to your breath…” and you secretly think, “WTH does that even mean?!” and spend the meditation writing your grocery list.

Being Enough

“For me, and for many of us, our first waking thought of the day is “I didn’t get enough sleep.” The next one is “I don’t have enough time.” Whether true or not, that thought of not enough occurs to us automatically before we even think to question or examine it. We spend most of the hours and the days of our lives hearing, explaining, complaining, or worrying about what we don’t have enough of… We don’t have enough exercise. We don’t have enough work. We don’t have enough profits. We don’t have enough power. We don’t have enough wilderness. We don’t have enough weekends. Of course, we don’t have enough money – ever.

We’re not thin enough, we’re not smart enough, we’re not pretty enough or fit enough or educated or successful enough, or rich enough – ever. Before we even sit up in bed, before our feet touch the floor, we’re already inadequate, already behind, already losing, already lacking something. And by the time we go to bed at night, our minds race with a litany of what we didn’t get, or didn’t get done, that day. We go to sleep burdened by those thoughts and wake up to the reverie of lack… What begins as a simple expression of the hurried life, or even the challenged life, grows into the great justification for an unfulfilled life.”

This quote from Lynne Twist is such a summation of a lot of our beliefs, isn’t it? That sense of lack, of separateness keeps us believing that we aren’t enough and that we will never be enough…

Having Enough

This week’s talk is focused on HAVING ENOUGH. Now, I’m not here to tell you not to want or hope or dream for yourself. Not at all. Yet, it is valuable to reflect on unhealthy desire vs. healthy desire for the sake of our happiness.

Unhealthy desires are the assumed antidote to unconscious feelings of loneliness, insecurity, boredom and vulnerability. We are bored so we open the fridge… That type of thing.

Unhealthy desires often have a driven quality to them. A firmness or rigidity to the body. A closing of the heart. And, a stickiness in the mind.

How do we shift towards a healthy desire instead? Hint: remember last week’s hashtag? #tenderisthenewtough
