We bought a canoe for Father’s Day this year. I ordered a life jacket for myself, and I received notice it was on backorder for 30 days. This week, I received notice that it is on backorder for another 30 days. This run on all things outdoors brings me such joy.

With the slowing and shutting down of our so-called normal lives, we have been reminded of the joy to be found just outside our doors. You’ve noticed it too, haven’t you?

All the gardening happening. And the walking. The kiddie pools and the sprinklers. The patios. Not to mention the visits to lakes, rivers, mountains and streams.

We’ve always known nature brings us peace, but never have so many of us chosen it as THE thing to do with this limited, precious time we have each time. Until now.

So many of us find balance in going for hikes, in running, in bike rides and campfires…. The reasons for this may be varied and myriad, but there is one reason I want to explore today -

The ancient meditation practitioners discovered within each of us is a mini-universe. Everything found on the outside can be found on the inside.

Inside this clay jug

there are canyons and

pine mountains,

and the maker of canyons

and pine mountains!

All seven oceans are inside,

and hundreds of millions of stars.

The acid that tests gold is here,

and the one who judges jewels.

And the music

that comes from the strings

that no one touches,

and the source of all water.

If you want the truth, I will tell you the truth:

Friend, listen: the God whom I love is inside.

Kabir

As we connect with the elements externally, we are also connecting to them internally which brings us a sense of balance and peace. If you are having trouble with your meditation practice feeling dry or stale, you might try practicing outside. If you are feeling cooped up and stressed, you might bring each of the elements to mind as part of your meditation practice.

Join me for today’s episode of The Mindful Minute as we celebrate the connection between meditation, nature and peace. We will have a brief discussion followed by a 20-min guided meditation.
