I intended to talk about “fierceness” in the second installment of my Election Month meditation series. I look forward to talking about the intersection of ferocity and mindfulness {and I will soon!}, and yet…

In the days since last week, which feels like last year it lasted so long, I have felt such an intense exhaustion, a level of weariness, that I knew today was not the day for fierce-ness. Tomorrow perhaps.

Next week, definitely.

But today, today’s a day for nourishment. Today is a day for filling up rather than draining. For remembering our loveliness. Before we can come together and unite, we must remember the fullness of ourselves. If we show up half-dragging and mostly drained, we don’t have much capacity to move forward.

We can use our meditation practice as a tool for clearer thinking, wise action, and getting through our days in an engaged way, and we can also use our meditation practice as a way to remember our loveliness. It can be a practice to refill our mental and emotional cups with nourishment and vitality.

As poet Lynn Ungar says:

Imagine setting it all down—

papers, plans, appointments, everything—

leaving only a note: “Gone

to the fields to be lovely. Be back

when I’m through with blooming.”

Today’s special meditation is a metaphorical journey to the fields to be lovely once again. I hope you’ll join me!
